The Humberside, North East and West Riding Branches are pleased to extend an invitation to all members to attend this event, which is to be held at the Ambassador Leisure Hotel, Scarborough, between 24th and 26th October 2008. The hotel is situated to the south of the town centre, some 20 minutes walk from the railway station; it affords an excellent view over the bay and several leisure facilities.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Friday 24th October:

For those arriving from early afternoon onwards, we offer the opportunity to visit Scarborough Falsgrave signal box – a listed building and one of the largest ex-NER lever frames still in use, originally having 120 levers. Access is from platform 1 and a guide will be on hand to host small visiting groups – between 14.00 and 16.00. Plans are in hand to link the station area signalling into a panel at Seamer, so any enthusiasts for traditional signalling should enjoy this visit.

About 16.30 we hope to arrange a group photograph on platform 1’s ‘longest seat’.

At the hotel, members may take either a bar snack (£4.95 each, 17.30-19.00) or a restaurant meal (£15.00 each, 18.00-21.00) – for which pre-booking is essential. An illustrated talk on “The Railways Around Scarborough” will commence at 20.00 in the Brontë Room and is to be presented by Robin Lidster.

By early evening, the ‘Persian Market’ sales stands will be established in the Charlotte Room.

Saturday 25th October:

Breakfast will be available from 07.30. Coaches will depart from the hotel at 09.00 for a round trip with related visits to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The northbound train from Pickering departs at 11.00, prior to which members may visit the carriage depot there. Lunches, pre-booked, will be distributed on the train.

63395 heads through Newtondale (NYMR) on a Parcels Group charter.

If any ‘Heartbeat’ fans wish to visit the filming location, they may alight at Goathland (arrive 11.50, depart 14.50). Upon arrival at Grosmont, the party will be split for visits to the depot and signal box. Note that those alighting at Goathland will not have time to take part in the Grosmont visits. The train returns from Grosmont at 14.30, arriving in Pickering at 15.40. The coaches will set off for Scarborough at 16.15, arriving in good time for the evening dinner.

Alternatively, for those not wishing to travel on the NYMR, members or partners may wish to visit Dalby Forest by mini bus. To do this, one of the Pickering coaches will call at Thornton Dale en route, to connect with the forest tour mini bus. Refreshments and light lunches may be obtained at the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre. Participants on the Dalby Forest tour will have time to explore Pickering (church, museum and shops) before returning to Scarborough.

The evening dinner will commence promptly at 19.30 and will be followed by an address from our guest speaker.

Then put your clocks back one hour!

Sunday 26th October:

Breakfast will be available between 08.00 and 10.00.

The Officers’ Conference will commence at 09.15 in the Brontë Room, during which there will be a coffee break at 10.45. Business should be concluded by 13.00.

Members and guests not attending the conference may wish to go an excursion to Whitby and Whitby Abbey (an ‘English Heritage’, ‘Heritage Scotland’ or ‘Cadw’ membership card will be useful for entry to the abbey). The coach will leave the hotel at 09.00 and will return by 12.30.

Those wishing to take lunch at the hotel should pre-order this upon arrival on the Friday evening. Separate course prices are available (the 4-course total price is £14.30).

Whilst the formalities conclude at Sunday lunchtime, please note that members may visit the North Bay Railway in the afternoon, when locomotives will be specially on view and opportunities to ride over the system will be available.

Note that the last main line train for most longer distance connections (i.e. further than Crewe, Birmingham or Edinburgh) on a Sunday leaves from Scarborough at 16.45. There are later departures at 18.45 (Liverpool), 20.45 and 21.45 (both Manchester), but all have fewer connections available from York or Leeds.
