On Wednesday 23rd February 1994, British Rail Trainload Freight locomotive 37890 was named 'The Railway Observer' by RCTS President Hugh Gould and Chairman Rodney Lissenden. The naming ceremony, which was held at Hither Green depot on a very grey, wet morning was attended by members of the RCTS Management Committee and two former chairmen.
A full description of the naming ceremony is given in The Railway Observer (RO) April 1994 on page 148. Additional photographs of the naming ceremony, including one of the naming party, are on pages 168 and 169 of the same issue of RO.
A secondary plate, explaining the name, was fitted below the nameplate at a later date.
After working in many parts of the U.K. for the next five years, 37890 was sent through the Channel Tunnel to Eurre in France in July 1999 as part of a batch of EWS class 37 locomotives used during the construction work on the extension of the LGV from Valence to Marseilles. The nameplates had been removed before it began its journey to France. The final photograph shows 37890 at Eurre.
37890 was 'repatriated' through the Channel Tunnel in September 2000.
The history describes the life of 37890 from its 'birth' as D6868 in 1963 until the present time, including its refurbishing and conversion to class 37/7 in 1987, with all depot and pool allocations and transfers.
The log contains allocation and pool changes for 37890, since its naming, as well as all workings and sightings that have been reported to the RCTS. After its return from France the log continues to report major changes but detailed workings are no longer recorded.
