TOPS Locomotive Pool Codes

 Alphabetical Order  Company Order 

The following is a list of TOPS codes which can be used in conjunction with the monthly stock changes in the RO. It is intended to do regular updates as necessary. Members are welcome to send any alterations and comments to Norman Hayllar.

A number of Pool Codes in use seem to be out of date, e.g. CREL. There are others which are still “live” but have no allocation and are unlikely to be used. DBS regularly transfer their locomotives, especially Cl.66, between Pools depending upon scheduled duties or maintenance.

Pool Codes do not exist for British American Railway Services Limited (BARS).

• BARS is a rolling stock hire, maintenance company, and railway owner. It was formed to acquire the assets of ECT Rail Holdings in 2008. Subsidiaries of British American include RMS Locotec, RT Rail, Weardale Railway, Dartmoor Railway, and Devon and Cornwall Railway and from September 2010 Hanson Traction Ltd. Pool Codes do exist, however, for the subsidiary companies Hanson Traction, RT Rail and RMS Locotec.

Finally, two “ghost” pools (DXXB and DXXC) are on the system; these, together with a number of “ghost” locomotive numbers, are only used for staff TOPS training purposes.
