Photographic Portfolio

The Society's Photographic and Technical Portfolios are of interest to any member who has an interest in the photography of the railway scene whether at home or abroad. Subject matter can be wide ranging varying from up to date modern traction, infrastructure to vintage steam.

There are two groups of portfolios, one devoted to colour transparencies the other to prints, both colour and black and white. Each operates on the same principle. A circulating box contains a single picture submitted by each participating member along with a so called ‘criticism’ or appraisal sheet. Full details are entered on the sheet and this will typically include as much information as possible on the picture e.g. precise location, time, diagram of train, weather etc plus of course detail on relevant photographic data. Usually recorded are camera and film type, exposure, digital information, printing systems, processing laboratories, manipulation techniques etc.

The box then follows a set circulation list passing from one member to the next. Wherever possible the list is arranged such that a personal handover may be arranged otherwise it is posted on. Participants are nationwide ranging from Scotland to Wales, Kent and Devon. Upon receipt a member then has the pleasure of viewing around two dozen pictures and is in turn invited to offer, as appropriate, unbridled praise for a shot or more usually constructive comment on how it might have been improved, either at the taking or processing stage. At the same time it is equally interesting to read what other members have written regarding a particular picture. Whatever it is certain that many, often very useful, hints and tips will emerge to help you improve your photography. This may range from new ways to ‘process’ digital images to information on traders offering good deals on equipment and consumables.

One other benefit of membership is undoubtedly the opportunity to expand your circle of friends and acquaintances who share your interests. Moreover participation is entirely free (apart from postage costs) to fully paid-up RCTS members.

If you would like further information then contact the secretary, Les Nixon or consult the Railway Observer.
