Bristol Bulletin - July 2010

Bristol On 10th June 6201 “Princess Elizabeth” arrived at 13.00 with a Cathedrals Express charter from Victoria. On 12th June 08822 arrived at Temple Meads from St Philips Marsh at 20.38 to collect 43026/161 which had arrived on the down through line after failing at Chippenham with brake problems on 43026 on the 16.30 from Paddington, and then continuing ECS to Bristol. The Avon Binliner was worked by 66514/559/585/599 during the month,

Loco-Hauled locals After just one week 67016 was replaced and 67003+67018 worked the Paignton diagram from 31st May to 4th June. 67016+67017 returned and worked the diagram for the rest of the month. 67016+67017 worked the 09.09 to Weymouth and 16.55 return on Saturdays12th, but 67003 worked alone on 5th and 67017 on 19th. 57305+57308 worked the Taunton to Cardiff diagram from 31st May to 4th June, when 57304+57305 took over the diagram. 57304 failed several times during the month with units substituting. The saga continued on 17th when problems with 57304 again resulted in the 07.28 from Taunton starting at Bristol Temple Meads with 153368 to Bristol Parkway and then 09.12 to Weston-Super-Mare. Meanwhile 66721 replaced 57304 at Taunton and with 57305 leading worked the 11.02 to Cardiff, with 66721 leading the 14.00 return. 57305 then headed the 16.16 from Taunton but was diverted via Bristol Parkway to reverse, and returned with the 19.00 from Cardiff. On 18th 57304+57305 ran as scheduled on the 07.28 from Taunton and continued until arrival at Taunton at 16.04 when a wheel problem on a coach resulted in cancellation of the 16.16 from Taunton. 57305+57309 worked on 21 June and on 22nd until arrival at Cardiff at 13.22 when 158950 took over for the 14.00 to Taunton and 16.16 from Taunton as far as Temple Meads where 57303+57309 then took over for the remainder of the diagram and continued all day on 23rd. They continued on 24th until arrival at Taunton about 10.30 with ECS from Weston when 66402 replaced 57303 and hauled the 11.02 from Taunton and continued on the diagram with 57309 for the rest of the day and continued on 25th.

Bristol Railport (formerly Bristol West Depot) The former Freightliner Depot just south of Parson Street Junction was restored to use and reopened at the beginning of June. 66572 was the first train to arrive, from Grain, at 04.33 on Saturday 5th Jun and returned on Monday 7th. The return is 10.00 to Grain or Tilbury SX and Ipswich SO. Locomotives noted have been 66571 on 8th, 66590 on 11th, 66501 on 12th, 66536 on 15th-18th, 66572 on 19th to Ipswich and 66536 on 24th. The first locomotive to visit the site was 66542 on a crew training LE run from Southampton arriving at 12.15 on 29th May. Track, consisting of a loop and short headshunt, was laid by Freightliner engineers and by 21st June two long-reach grab tractors were being used for unloading.

Barton Hill/Kingsland Road Green liveried 47815 has been noted at Barton Hill where it is used for shunting stock. 31106 with stock 6262, 999605, 9702 was stabled at Kingsland Road on 3rd June.

Bristol Parkway On 8th June D444 (50044)+50026+D821+D1062 worked down LE at 12.45 en route from the Severn Valley Railway to the West Somerset Railway. 66426/430 worked the Bridgwater flask train up at 13.20 on 3rd June. On 8th 66842 worked down steel to Margam at 12.44 and D444+50026+D821+D1062 worked up LE at 12.50 returning from the WSR to the SVR. 66842 returned LE up at 17.12. The Millbrook freightliner was worked by 66501/533/539/559/562/568/569/571/594, 66955/956. The empty tanks from Theale were noted with 66135/136 on 1st June, 66039 on 3rd, 66039/030 on 8th, 66201 on 11th, 66238/159 on 17th, 66213 on 18th (with EWS tanks), and 66039/150 on 19th.

Stoke Gifford After an absence of a few weeks Class 70s returned to the area from 1st June with 70006 working several coal trains to Rugeley from Avonmouth and Portbury. 70004 was noted here on 19th and 20th. On 11th 66514 arrived with stone from Avonmouth at 14.53. on 18th 66623 arrived with empties stone from Theale at 16.34 and was stabled here until 21st

Westerleigh 60039 continued to work the train from Robeston between 1st June and 11th, 60071 on 16th-18th and 21st-25th June and 60010/13/14/40/54/67/85 and 66159 have been reported on the Lindsey diagram.

Bath On 5th June 59202 departed at 07.29 with an excursion to Newtown, returning at 22.42. On 18th 66558 worked up at 11.35 with the Fairwater to Fairwater, Taunton HOBC train.

Filton A new cement train now runs from Westbury to Earles Siding via the Severn Tunnel passing here between 13.15 and 14.00 on Mondays and Fridays with 66604 on 4th June, 66555 on 7th 66619 on 11th and 66596 on 21st and 66610 on 25th. On 6th June 66612+66616 worked up at 17.28 with the HBOC. On 7th 66545 worked down stone hoppers to Theale at 09.56 and on 15th 66523 worked a similar train at 10.00. On 9th D444 + 37308 worked up LE from Eastleigh to Canton at 16.13.

Portbury Branch 70006 worked 08.30 to Rugeley on 2nd, 3rd and 4th June, the first reported coal train from here for a few weeks. Other trains have departed at 07.00 and/or 10.50. Locomotives noted have been 66558/599, 66618, 70004. The Mossend car train was worked by 66148 on 22nd.

Westbury The Bristol branch observation afternoon on 24th June saw the extra trains operated to Castle Cary for the Glastonbury Music Festival. Additional services were provided by an HST operating at 09.48, 12.48, 15.48 and 18.48 from Bristol, via Taunton (reverse) to Castle Cary, then continuing ECS back to Bristol via Westbury. The 09.15, 11.15, 13.15 and 15.15 Paddington to Cardiff HST and the 19.30 Paddington to Weston-Super-Mare HST were all diverted from Swindon to run via Melksham and Westbury (pick-up only stop) to Castle Cary with the Cardiff sets returning ECS to Paddington via the Berks and Hants route. 150249 operated an additional service from Westbury to Castle Cary at 12.17 and 15.20, returning ECS to Westbury. Similar workings had operated on the previous day and were due to operate also on the morning only of 25th. Stone trains on 24th were rather fewer than normal and locomotives on these and other trains were 59005, 59101/102/104, 59201, 66013/142/160. 08575 was the yard pilot.

  
   66013 arrives at Westbury with empty bogie hoppers from Wootton Bassett to Merehead. This train is booked for a Mendip Rail Class 59 but on 24 June it was worked by a DBS Class 66.   Paul Udey

Yatton On 27th May 66148 work up at 19.30 with the scrap train from Exeter Alphington Road. On 17th 66612+66558 top and tailed a sleeper recovery/replacement train to Cholsey up at 20.13 and 66616+66611 followed at 20.42 with the HOBC train.

Highbridge The DBS (ex-EWS) Managers’ train with DVT 82146 leading and propelled by 67029 worked down from Toton to Exeter at 16.31.

Taunton 6024 “King Edward” was stabled at Taunton station with coaches 35333 and 5008 from 16th to 18th June as part of the GWR 175 celebrations.
