Carlisle Station observation

Eight members attended the Branch observation at Carlisle despite the weather forecast suggesting that snow might be possible later in the day. Most travelled there by New St – Scotland Voyager services as the early morning Pendolino services from Euston were delayed due to a fatality in the Nuneaton area.

Passenger services were the expected mix of Pendolinos and Voyagers, plus the occasional Cl.185, on the WCML services to and from Scotland. One northbound Pendolino was noted arriving with a (dead) pheasant somehow attached to the front of the unit – the driver commented, when it was drawn to his attention that “there had been one hell of a bang” when it was hit ! Northern’s services to Newcastle, the S&C and the Cumbrian Coast were a mix of Cl.153, 156 & 158 while Scotrail 156s appeared on services over the G&SWR route.

Anglo-Scottish coal services provided the bulk of the freight sightings: departmental services and one Enterprise service made up the remainder. Nuclear traffic was conspicuous by its absence although a convoy of 3 DRS locos were noted heading for Sellafield just as we were leaving for the journey home.

Most of the party had participated on the S&C trip the previous week and so were in possession of North West Rover tickets, which allows travel into Scotland as far as Lockerbie or Dumfries. Consequently we took advantage of this to obtain a view of the traffic around Kingmoor depot & yard. As is often the case, the view of the DRS depot was partially obscured by coal trains awaiting entry to the yard but the presence of some of the newest DRS class 66s (431 & 432) satisfied many in the party. However, the most interesting sight for me was the sight of cut-down 08993 acting as yard pilot, a very long way from its original haunts on the Cwmmawr line near my home town in South Wales.

We had all opted for the G&SWR train, partly to travel over the re-instated double track section between Gretna Junction & Annan. As this gave us a very tight 1 minute connection into a return service at Dumfries, half the party got off at Annan to ensure making the connection while the rest took the chance. In the event the train from Carlisle arrived at Dumfries about 2 minutes early and the return train was about 2 minutes late so the connection was easily made. The Annan sub-party were rewarded with the sight of 66608 passing through on empty FHH coal hoppers – some of them were also rewarded by a visit to a bar in the old station building !

We were very fortunate with the weather as the predicted snow & rain never materialised although it was quite cold at Carlisle – luckily the station is large enough to provide areas that were sheltered from the worst of the wind. Our Pendolino home was running slightly late (as were most WCML passenger services) and so the Chester contingent missed, by 1 minute, their connection at Bank Quay – where (yet again) it was very wet & windy !

A list of sightings is given below, in good faith, based on records taken by Dave Douglas (who arrived much earlier than the main party),Geoff Morris and Alan Rhind.
