Resuming the regular monthly series of outdoor fixtures nine branch members made their way using West Midland Day Ranger tickets to Leamington Spa for a long spell of station observations with many of us appreciating the main building’s style complete with its Art Deco lettering. The morning journeys there were not without incident due to signalling problems affecting Cross Country services and in true Reginald Perrin style one train was diverted from Wolverhampton because of a plastic bag on the overhead wires near Coseley. Three West Midlands’ members joined in with the station observations although there was disappointment in that there seemed to be fewer freight workings and that a steam movement involving Nunney Castle was postponed (it ran two days later). Despite the brilliant sunshine there was a stiff breeze blowing and Derek’s cap blew onto the track of the bay platform 1. A member of the station staff was summoned who rescued the cap to great applause. Most of the group made their way back to home territory via Coventry and Nuneaton.
