Meeting Reports

Monday 17th November
Reflections of the 1990s
Brian Roberts

Our branch member Brian Roberts produced a fascinating show reflecting on the Railway Scene in the 1990s at the Chester meeting of 17th November. Brian was able to show many different location shots across the railway network in that decade of enormous change. Here was an evening showing the changes in the operating companies and of the myriad use of liveries, some fondly remembered and others somehow forgotten. Many views were taken within the branch area especially with impressive views of trains taken from down below the Widnes-Runcorn viaduct. The many WCML diversions through St Helens and past Edge Hill and of the Cross Country services out of Liverpool in that decade brought back many memories. The closure of collieries and other industrial plants were also well chronicled as Brian always managed to get there in time to record the freight workings. In addition the meeting saw many of the new 9F 2-10-0 books being sold.

Monday 3rd November
Railways of Saltney
Geoff Pickard

A very well attended meeting at Port Sunlight on 3rd November saw Geoff Pickard, co author of ‘Railways around Saltney’ give a highly nostalgic and enjoyable visit to the railway infrastructure and to the trains seen in that township just west of Chester. Three railway routes converged here and with extensive sidings and a loco shed at Mold Junction the area became a hive of activity. The rationalisation since the Beeching era now only sees the double track North Wales main line and the single line ex GWR route to Wrexham. It is hard to realise quite how heavy the summer holiday traffic really was with 249 workings passing by Saltney Jct over an 11 hours period one July Saturday in 1960 involving 172 locos, of which 64 were ‘Black 5s.’

The branch is grateful to the Wrexham Railway Society for its loan of their digital projector for the evening.

Monday 20th October
Members Slides

The members’ evening in Chester of 20th October brought the expected and the unexpected subjects. John Cowlishaw revealed his East Lincolnshire roots and a picture from each year since 1970; Barry Shore showed some of the terminus slides he had not used in his evening at Port Sunlight; Geoff Morris highlighted South Wales and of scenes today in the valleys, including the changes at Abercynon; Alan Donaldson highlighted Germany and Luxembourg earlier this year complete with Arriva Trains at work and of a station named Aha; John Feild covered our branch’s visits this year as well as Tornado at Loughborough and Scots Guardsman at Chester; Gordon Davies took us up the Royal Gorge route following the Arkansas River out of Canyon City, which included a cab ride with magnificent scenic views and of a bear who had been loitering on the railroad.

Tuesday 14th October
Observation at Warrington Bank Quay

Eleven members and a former member who had seen the event publicised turned up at Warrington Bank Quay on 14th October. The weather turned wet in the afternoon but some excitement of sorts was had with a 158820 replacing a Cl.175 on the Llandudno shuttle and 33025 heading south as light engine at breakneck speed. Compensatory news that four Cl.67 and three Cl.47/8 locos were on Arpley EWS made up for the fact that there was only one Fiddler’s Ferry working during the day.

Detailed observations are listed here.

Monday 6th October
Railway terminals Part 1
Barry Shore

The opening meeting of the Port Sunlight season on 6th October saw Barry Shore produce an excellent show on station terminals he had visited in the North and in the East of England. By terminals he meant where journeys he had taken terminated so we were treated to views of 105 stations taken over a period of thirty years. Starting off from Port Sunlight we ventured north via Cumbria and Stranraer to Wick before heading south via the North East and down into East Anglia terminating the evening in London’s Liverpool Street. Barry produced encyclopaedic knowledge about each station’s history as well as reminding us of so many first generation electric and diesel units that worked the services when things seemed to be in decline. He reminded us also of those wonderful ADEX trains from Liverpool to all sorts of destinations 35 years ago such as to Cambridge where we saw the train headed by a Cl.25 and a Cl.31.

Sunday 5th October
Branch Stand at Wirral Bus and Tram Show

The branch had its regular spot at the annual Wirral Bus and Tram Show on 5th October. Attendance numbers seemed to be down on previous years with the branch funds only increasing slightly as a result. The main result is that the society gained much useful publicity and goodwill. Grateful thanks go to Gordon Davies, Alan Donaldson, Alan Turton and Bill Cashen for giving up either the whole or part of the day to man the stand.

Monday 15th September
UK Steam in the 60s
Hugh Ballantyne

Well over 50 members and visitors piled into the opening meeting of the Chester season on 15th September when Hugh Ballantyne highlighted BR steam in the 1960s. Starting off with the Eastern we saw many of the Pacifics on the GN main line in addition to views around the North East. The Southern followed concentrating on the Bulleid Pacifics as well as scenes around Guildford and Yeovil. The Western saw views of the Bath and Bristol area along with fascinating shots of the Cardiff Valley areas. The Midland saw superb views of steam over Shap and Beattock with the Stanier Pacifics receiving the most audience cclamation. Chester’s array of the LNWR signal gantries brought many memories flooding back and of course we finished with scenes in and around Bath Green Park. Hugh also showed many black and white scenes of workings in the 1950s and RCTS special trains were well featured throughout.

Tuesday 9th September
Observation at Nuneaton

Only seven MC&NW members gathered on Nuneaton station on what could be called a drizzly day. On this occasion the Liverpool contingent outnumbered the Chester one. The usual outward journey stop at Stafford was made before continuing on to Nuneaton. Notable sightings were Fastline 66303 and hired in DRS 66418 working Daw Mill–Ratcliffe power station coal trains. The group was hassled by confusing station announcements that saw them shuttling to and from platform 6 supposedly to make their way home via Birmingham because their Pendolino back to Crewe and Liverpool was to have been diverted away from Nuneaton due to overhead line problems north of Rugby. The comforts of the nearby ASDA store and of the station buffet at Nuneaton are to be recommended.

A detailed listing of observations at both Stafford and Nuneaton is available here.

Saturday 30th August
Churnet Valley Railway & Rudyard Lake Light Railway

A full report of this visit can be found here.

Saturday 23rd August
Long Marston
(Joint visit with West Riding Branch)

A full report of this visit appears here.

Tuesday 12th August
Observation at Warrington Bank Quay

Ten members attended this fixture. The Fiddlers Ferry coal workings brightened up what was otherwise a mundane day, which was interspersed with heavy rain showers and the occasional clap of thunder. The revamped station buffet is now open and like the one at Chester station does not accept the ‘Bite’ discount card. Work is progressing on the new booking office at the station entrance.

Only a few of the sightings from this fixture have been recorded and are listed here.

Sunday 27th July
Bala Lake Railway & Llangollen Railway

A full illustrated report appears here

Tuesday 15th July
Observation at Doncaster

A dozen members made their way across to Doncaster on 15th July for another of those lively observation sessions. For part of the day our number was added to by guest appearances from Steve Batty and Malcolm Riley with the latter joining in with our afternoon’s down platform in house entertainment. We were saddened that Geoff Morris our Outdoor Fixtures Secretary was unable to be present. The new National Express livery was beginning to make its appearance felt and the freight traffic was of especial interest especially when two DRS locos came through just before the Cl.185 for Manchester Airport was boarded for the return home. In addition the sight of a newly formed First Great Western 3 car Cl.158 (158958) moving in the sidings outside the works created great interest for all concerned.

A detailed listing of observations is available here.

Saturday 21st June
Visit to Siemens depot for First TransPennine Express, Ardwick

A full report of this visit can be found here

Tuesday 10th June
Observation at Warrington Bank Quay

The extended afternoon and evening station observations at Warrington Bank Quay on 10th June produced a dozen members and a great deal of friendly banter. The later schedule enabled the group to see electric locos hauling freight workings, to see the lone Cl.350 working to Preston and to see the Cl.325 Royal Mail units at work. Those who stayed until 20.45, were rewarded with the sight of six different locos classes in the station when the Carlisle - Eastleigh Enterprise service, hauled by a Cl.92 with a Cl.66 and Cl.90 dead in transit, was overtaken by a southbound convoy of light engines, made up of two Cl.37s, two Cl.47s, and a Cl.57.

A detailed listing of observations is available here.

Tuesday 13th May
Observation at Chesterfield station

New ground was broken on 13th May when for this informal station and location observation we moved to Chesterfield. Eleven members took part and for some peculiar reason the Liverpool group having travelled via Sheffield spent the day on the station itself - whilst the Chester group having travelled via Derby, still in its rebuilding throes, spent most of the time on the footbridge ten minutes walk north of the station in order to gain a better photo vantage point. There was a brief amicable gathering together in true Dr Livingstone mode before the Liverpool group headed back home first. It was good to see the East Midland Trains HSTs hard at work and there was the bonus of seeing the preserved diesels working south.

A detailed listing of observations is available here.

Tuesday 29th April
Day out in the North West using Lancashire Day Ranger ticket.

A group of twelve members took advantage of another day ranger ticket on 29th April for one of Geoff Morris’s inspired itineraries. This time it was the Lancashire area that was covered on a generally sunny day. The routes officially covered were Liverpool Central, Southport, Wigan Wallgate, Wigan North Western, Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham, Lancaster, Preston, Blackpool South, Kirkham & Wesham, Blackpool North, Preston, Ormskirk and back to Liverpool Central. The hairiest connection came at Lancaster with our Voyager running late and the urgent need to get all of the party across the footbridge for the awaiting Heysham train. Apart from passenger control at Blackpool North being over restrictive, station and train staffs were generally very friendly throughout the day with the party.

Tuesday 15th April
Observation at Stafford and Nuneaton

Eleven members participated in the informal station observations at Stafford and at Nuneaton on 15th April on a day, which started off brightly enough but degenerated into a cold and very wet afternoon. Some East Midlands Branch members were met amongst at least 40 enthusiasts on the platforms. Both Chester and Liverpool groups joined up at Stafford for an hour or so and later noted the continuing West Coast Main Line upgrading taking place especially at Lichfield Trent Valley. No sooner had the group arrived at Nuneaton than preserved 40145 was noted running light engine towards the Nene Valley Railway having earlier completed its rescue mission for a wrongly routed oil tanks train. A down Pendolino did a spectacular emergency stop through the station in a cloud of dust and brake smoke to enliven the day. This was a change as it is usually difficult to note Pendolino set numbers when they pass through the station at such speed.

A detailed listing of observations is available here.

Monday 7th April
The last 25 years in East Anglia
John Day

The final meeting of the Port Sunlight season on 7th April had Society Hon Secretary John Day showing us his wonderful selection of colour slides of the past 25 years in East Anglia.

In his own incorrigible way John has managed to take shots from all sorts of interesting locations across East Anglia with the increasing container traffic on the Felixtowe branch being especially well covered. His scenic views of trains passing over the water at Manningtree were equally fascinating. Not only did we see the many different liveries used but we also heard about how loco viewing points had changed over the years and as to how they could be improved.

The room was bursting to capacity – testament to the anticipation for the evening out.

Monday 17th March
Members Slides
Members show up to 30 slides of their choice

The Chester meeting with its members’ slides show on 17th March was a treat for those present. John Cowlishaw presented UK train workings that departed in a half hour period from 09.40; Barry Shore covered the month of March with scenes from 1975 to 1982, including some with Class 502 units; John Feild showed carriage interiors from the past fifty years including those B.R.buffet cars with plastic seats; Robin Whyman highlighted his visits to Calgary and the highly scenic Rocky Mountains ; Geoff Morris showed scenes from across Scotland, complete with unique Forth Bridge views, and of Eurostar pre and post St Pancras; Alan Donaldson showed scenes from 1988 in the UK and in Switzerland/Austria – complete with the tiniest works shunter imaginable at Olten.

Tuesday 11th March
Observation at Warrington Bank Quay

Despite a pessimistic weather forecast it turned out nice in the end for the eleven hardy souls at Warrington Bank Quay on 11th March. The sight of 66429 on a southbound ‘Malcolm’ cheered the three amigos for their first sighting of that loco and we had the rare sight of a Dallam there and back trip working with 08897 hauling nothing! The sight of two Fiddlers Ferry coal workings (one full and the other empty) passing each other on the lower level was a noteworthy sighting, whilst the two smokers exiled briefly to the station car park witnessed some heavy clamping of vehicles that shouldn’t have been there.

A detailed listing of observations is available here.

Monday 3rd March
Yet More American Wanderings
Gordon Davies

The meeting at Port Sunlight of 3rd March was treated to a treat of yet more North American Wanderings from our Branch Chairman, Gordon Davies. Concentrating on a round journey from Atlanta Gordon used slides taken on many of his visits thus being able to recount then and now scenes especially with the New Orleans trams (or trolleys as they call them) before and after Hurricane Katrina. He tends to find rain in Alabama and to our amusement he recounted tales of himself standing on an anthill and of coming face to face with a raccoon. Comment was made from within the audience as to the appearance of the American rail-roads – there being no sign of any weeds. It was a splendid evening’s entertainment.

Tuesday 26th February
Heart of Wales

8 members took a day trip to Swansea, using a Heart of Wales Circular Day Ranger ticket, travelling outwards via the Central Wales line and returning via Cardiff & Hereford. 4 hours without refreshments on a class 153 may not be to everyone's taste but we were appropriately prepared and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This was not a trip for the number crunchers but one to appreciate the superb Mid-Wales scenery. We were not impressed by the seating arrangements in the refurbished standard class accommodation of the FGW HST between Swansea & Cardiff (only 2 tables per coach, one of them with a restricted view) and cast covetous glances at the luxurious first class accommodation, complete with leather seats. We returned to Chester in a class 158 on a Cardiff - Holyhead service that was well-filled throughout. The journey on the Central Wales line was enlivened by an unscheduled stop to remove a mattress from the track near Llandeilo: the Branch Chairman’s resulting ‘witticism’ about sleepers produced a collective groan from the many passengers who overheard it!

Monday 18th February
Signal boxes of the Aire Valley.
Malcolm Riley

Malcolm Riley came to Chester on 18th February and regaled us with his tales about signal boxes of the Aire Valley. Not only did we learn a great deal about the workings of signal boxes and the men who worked them, but we also learnt a great deal about the changing railway scene in that part of the West Riding since Malcolm started his career way back in 1961. The one time immense parcels traffic at Bradford Forster Square was also related as Malcolm and others played their part in loading parcels onto trains. With several railway visitors in the audience Malcolm’s anecdotes about cleaning tasks both inside and outside of the signal boxes went down very well.

Tuesday 12th February
Observation at Doncaster

The observation at Doncaster had both the expected and the unexpected. National Express ECML workings were badly affected following overhead wire problems north of Thirsk and a bridge strike in the Grantham area. Grand Central’s HSTs roared through the station at full tilt and freight workings did not seem as many as been hoped for even though two Class 60 locos followed through on consecutive workings. The sun shone throughout and in addition to the seventeen branch members present we were joined by both Steve Batty and Malcolm Riley. Because of the ECML problems Society President Hugh Gould found himself on platform 3 and so a magic attendance number of twenty was achieved!

Three of the Liverpool group who departed from Doncaster on the 15.43 for Manchester Airport just missed their Trans Pennine connection at Manchester Piccadilly. They caught the on time 17.37 East Midlands Trains departure (12.57 ex Norwich) for Liverpool Lime Street with two car unit 158866 which was filled to absolute capacity with standing passengers as far as Warrington Central. Arrival at Lime Street station was 20 minutes late. Another Liverpool member took the 1720 departure for Llandudno as far as Newton le Willows with 175108, which was wedged from Oxford Road. Even though about 40 got out at Newton le Willows passengers were still standing in all three cars on departure.

A detailed listing of observations is here. The branch is grateful to David Rapson for providing it.

Monday 4th February
Civil Engineer Part 3
John Ryan

When new railway histories are written about Merseyside many of those at the Port Sunlight meeting of 4th February will remember the talk that John Ryan gave of the civil engineering works he was involved with in the building of the Merseyrail link and loop lines in the ten year period leading up the launch of the new services in 1977.

John took numerous views of the work done with the demolition of the fine old ground level Liverpool Central Station through to the opening out of the Northern Line through from Sandhills on the L & Y route and out to Brunswick on the CLC route. Not forgetting the work on the loop line, which had to go under Liverpool’s architectural masterpiece of St George’s Hall.

Tuesday 29th January
Cheshire Day Ranger outing

The use of Northern Rail’s Cheshire Day Ranger ticket on 29th January produced a new high of 16 members for an enjoyable group outing. Making their own way to Manchester Piccadilly the majority of the group then travelled via Stoke, Crewe, Liverpool, the CLC route to Manchester Oxford Road, Warrington Bank Quay, Ellesmere Port and Hooton before making their own ways back to from where they had started. In particular we travelled on one of just two daily through trains from Warrington Bank Quay to Ellesmere Port. The obliteration of the rail facilities at Stanlow refinery came as a shock to members who worked there only a few years ago. Our large group prompted some surprise from those train conductors checking tickets.

Monday 21st January
The Birkenhead Railway
Edgar Richards

The Chester meeting of 21st January was disappointed that David Burkhill Howart was unable to present his talk on the Abermule Disaster due to illness. Edgar Richards stepped into the breach with a talk on the Birkenhead Railway and interspersed many evocative slides with his own personal anecdotes of happenings on the line since he was an infant in Rock Ferry over 80 years ago. Most of the slides were from the last years of steam in the 1960s, but Edgar had made copies of prints and cards, which highlighted operations over the past 120 years. Naturally he also covered more recent scenes and concluded with a variety of workings leaving Birkenhead Docks.

Tuesday 15th January
Observation at Warrington Bank Quay

On 15th January, fourteen branch members (including a couple of ‘first timers’) outnumbered the other enthusiasts at Warrington Bank Quay. Daytime mail trains were scheduled to appear and 325007/15 duly worked from Willesden to Warrington RMT and back. 37405 on the Arpley - Ditton Enterprise attracted the most photographic attention whilst Pendolino 390051 was noteworthy because it carried the number ‘051’ on one cab front. One car of 156420 had suffered a heavy graffiti attack on one side with half of the coach being affected. Passenger service punctuality was near-perfect with most services on time and the worst less than 10 minutes late.

Monday 7th January
Golden Oldies
Slides taken around the country in the last few years of steam in the 1960s
John Cashen

The Port Sunlight meeting room was crammed to capacity on 7th January for the welcome return of John Cashen who spent the evening entertaining us with scenes from the mid 1960s. John had visited most parts of the country and we saw many fascinating shed scenes along with steam in its final years over Shap Summit. The usual LNER/GWR badinage was prevalent throughout the evening especially with scenes in the Swindon scrap line of Class V2s. The early diesel classes received good coverage too. His local coverage was even more fascinating, and this was enhanced by his recounting as to how Class 5 45156’s appearance was transformed through the sheer elbow grease applied by both John and Brian Woodward at Edge Hill early on in 1968.

Monday 17th December 2007
From Crewe to Carlisle
John Feild

It was an evening of nostalgia and fond memories at the Chester meeting of 17th December. With Mrs Joan Appleton’s approval, John Feild presented the late Reg Appleton’s show entitled, ‘From Crewe to Carlisle.’ Reg should have presented this show at Port Sunlight in January 2007 but illness had prevented that. Not only did we see train workings over a period of fifty years on the main line and on the coastal route through Workington, but we also saw many of the many industrial locos that had been seen nearby. Railway themed pub signs were also portrayed. To John and his friends there was the surprise that Reg had actually taken shots of diesel multiple units. John by way of his own tribute also included some portraits of Reg himself.

Tuesday 11th December 2007
WARRINGTON BANK QUAY

On a very bright and crisp day at Warrington Bank Quay on 11th December thirteen branch members were in a festive mood as the Class 67 hauled Northern Belle Christmas Lunch special came through at great speed, and the branch officers provided sustenance of a festive nature to those around them. There was also additional seasonal postal traffic to brighten the day but the freight traffic didn’t seem as much as normal. A twin piston aircraft slowly circled us overhead many times during the afternoon, which gave us the feeling that we were being watched from on high. It transpired later that it was the Cheshire County Constabulary spotter plane checking M62 traffic.
