Observations at Nuneaton and Rugby - 11th August 2009

Our August station observation on Tuesday August 11th was a little different from usual in having 2 locations. The Merseyside Railway Society, most of whose members are also RCTS members, had already arranged a day’s observation at Rugby for our ’normal’ observation day and so a joint fixture was held with them. Our normal venue in this area is Nuneaton and so Nuneaton and Rugby were offered as locations for members‘ observations. Some MRS members spent their time only at Rugby but most RCTS members visited both stations (and Northampton in the case of a few) during the day. Some also took advantage of the ticket to travel in some of the recently-delivered class 350/2s. In total, 16 RCTS members, including one from the West Midlands branch, took part in the day’s events.

Transfer between stations was facilitated by the use of West Midlands Day Ranger tickets which offered us a flexible way of travelling south from Crewe - although it does not permit travel on Virgin services. Members accordingly used varied routes south, some travelling on the “direct” London Midland service from Crewe (not that direct as it is routed via Stoke) while others travelled via Birmingham. The weather was disappointingly dull during the morning but improved dramatically in the early afternoon and brought out an array of matching Evertonian blue baseball caps at Nuneaton !

Freight traffic though Nuneaton on the Birmingham - Leicester line seemed reduced compared with our previous visits. In particular, there were fewer stone trains although the appearance of Fastline class 66s on coal trains between Daw Mill colliery and Ratcliffe power station raised interest. Virgin services no longer stop at Nuneaton during off-peak hours and instead run though at full line speed. Eventually we became quite proficient at identifying their numbers although to onlookers it would have seemed as if we were at a tennis match as our heads swivelled from side to side as the trains sped through!

For those who hadn’t been there since reconstruction was completed, Rugby station came as an eye-opener. Overall it provided a more congenial environment than Nuneaton, particularly in the afternoon when one could sit on the new down platform and observe everything comfortably - albeit at a distance in the case of up services. If you like Pendolinos then this is the place to come with a frequency of 8 in each direction during the off-peak. Currently there is an exception to this once every 4 hours as Virgin’s substitute Mk 3 rake is used on the Euston - Birmingham circuit. It was on (or very close to) time whenever we observed it (with 90029 and DVT 82126).

For a few of us there was a real bonus at the end of the day. We travelled on the 1703 London Midland service from Rugby to Crewe, changing at Stafford into a New St - Liverpool service which runs direct to Crewe (the service from Rugby is routed via Stoke). At Stafford we had just over 5 minutes to wait and just after we had walked across to platform 5 an announcement was made to stand clear on this platform. Almost immediately 66728 came through towing 86701/2 from Long Marston to Crewe. These were formerly 86205 & 86260 and have been purchased and refurbished (and re-liveried) by ETL for use as spot-hire locos. Our train to Crewe was routed via the fast lines and overtook the convoy near Betley Road. Consequently we were able to view them again (and this time get photos) when they arrived in Crewe station.
