Twelve members, including a welcome visitor from Ipswich, joined in with the traditional mid-summer’s afternoon/early evening observation (although some members had been present from earlier in the day and left for home earlier than the remainder) in reasonable weather conditions. The long gaps between trains passing by were interspersed with celebrations of a member’s 47th wedding anniversary and the usual banter over local football affiliations. Those who ventured outside the station noted that the "No Kissing" signs, which had attracted much media attention earlier in the year, had been changed. The origianl 'pictogram' had been replaced by a wordier version.

Class 66s from 4 operators (DBS, Freightliner, GBRf & Fastline) were seen by members who had arrived early. DBS and Freightliner examples are routine although the appearance of the only example in the new DBS livery (66152) was notable. More unusual were GBRf's 66711 on a Fiddlers Ferry - Newbiggin gypsum train in the early afternoon and Fastline's 66304 on driver training.

Two of the shrinking number of operational Cl.60 locomotives were still employed on the Liverpool Bulk terminal - Fiddlers Ferry coal trains. The HST National Rail Measurement train also came through at great speed and the evening Mail trains ran as expected.

390053 arrived on a down service at 20.12 having been seen departing at 16.22 on a non-stop run to Euston. This meant that it had completed the round trip in 3 hours & 50 mins. These services were scheduled to arrive Euston at 18.11 & depart at 18.30 so the Pendolino must have been turned around in about 20 mins and averaged over 100 mph when running (364 miles in no more than 3 hours 30 mins). Impressive !

At 19.30 08389 was shunting the Eastleigh 'Enterprise' in Arpley sidings .

At 20.25 37670 66121/127 were in Arpley stabling point while 66092 & 92030 were on trains in Arpley sidings (both facing south). 92017 was waiting at Acton Grange Junction to exit on to the main line on the Carlisle - Eastleigh 'Enterprise'.

A bridge strike was the cause of many of the late running passenger workings.
