Nothing more in 2013, but I have looked at the early months of next year.

Steam Excursions

For those with internet access visit the website www.uksteam.info

Saturday 1 March 2014 – Steam Dreams’ excursion to Cardiff (13.15 – 16.45) departs Waterloo at 07.15 and travels via Salisbury and Bath; it has the name ‘The Cathedrals Express’ and is steam-hauled throughout, though no specific locomotive has been identified as yet.

Saturday 12 April 2014 – ‘The Heart of Wales’ brings two ex-LMS Black 5s south, they are 44871 and 45407 and the route is diesel hauled from Cardiff to Shrewsbury (via Oxford) where locomotives are changed; there is to be a break of about 1 hour at Llandrindod Wells with the steam engines leaving the train at Cardiff Pengam to make way for diesel haulage through to the Midlands.

Diesel Excursions

A couple of Northern Belle trips are organised for Friday 28 February and Saturday 1 March 2014; On the first day departures are from Cardiff at 09.00 and Swansea at 10.15 for a journey into Pembrokeshire including a coach transfer to St Davids, so the train could be dropping-off at Fishguard Harbour, Haverfordwest or Milford Haven. The following day sees Northern Belle’s ‘St Davids Day Celebration Lunch’ commencing in Cardiff at 12.00 (returning by 17.30), no other pick-up points are shown, but views of the Welsh countryside are intimated. Both of these workings will have DRS Class 47s in top and tail mode, probably using the dedicated pair that have the umber and cream livery that matches the coaching stock.

Sunday 9 March 2014 – UK Railtours’ excursion from Paddington with the name ‘The Tower Gateway’ will use two DBS owned Class 66s and its journey will take it to Cwmbargoed and Tower Colliery.

Saturday 15 March 2014 – ‘The Heart of Wales Explorer’ is Pathfinder Tours’ first excursion into south Wales next year; starting from Derby the train travels south via Birmingham to Cardiff before returning northwards along the Heart of Wales line through Llandrindod Wells to Craven Arms and back to derby via Telford. Motive power is to be two DRS Class 20s.

Saturday 22 March 2014 – The ‘Heart of Wales Rambler’ is the name of Pathfinders’ second tour to this area in 8-days, starting from Banbury and travelling through the west Midlands to Craven Arms for a southbound run over the Heart of Wales line. It returns to Banbury via Abergavenny, Craven Arms, Telford and Stroud, haulage to be two DRS Class 47s.
