Reference is made in The Attilio Rossi ex-BRs D2232 and 13xxx-D3xxx to the possibility of the mystery 350 hp Class 08/10 in Italy being either 3034 or 3121. Both are recorded in the various disposal books as being scrapped at Derby Works. Similarly 3020, 3051, 3193, 12011/29/30/62/89/91& ED2 have been recorded as scrapped at Derby Works but as recorded below this information is extremely suspect with regard to ED2 and if ED2 was not scrapped at Derby what about the others?
The doubt about the disposal of ED2 comes about following a conversation with an enthusiast who was a second man in 1968 based at Tinsley. Fortunately he recorded much at the time and on 06/02/1968 he was second man on 7E15 05.00 Derby St. Marys – Tinsley Yard freight headed by 5683. He recalls and recorded that the train stopped at Clay Cross and attached ED2 from the sidings. With ED2 in the formation the train continued to Tapton (Chesterfield) loop where ED2 was removed from the train. There was a direct connection from Tapton loop into the yard of Steelbreaking & Dismantling. It would thus appear highly probable that later in the day it was moved into the yard of Steelbreaking & Dismantling and subsequently scrapped there. No observation of it in that yard has so far been traced though. Interestingly, every Diesel Disposal book records this to have been scrapped at Derby Works and those that quote a date usually give September 1967! Quite clearly it was not scrapped at Derby Works so if this was not scrapped there what about the others? In addition, enthusiast Howard Bolton has been in contact to say that his records show ED2 still to be present at Derby Works as late as 21/01/1968!
Analysis by John Hall of the various references to the disposal of the above locomotives in the RO and elsewhere generally quotes a date last noted followed by a date not present with an assumption that the locomotive was scrapped at Derby Works between the two dates. Quite probably that did happen but certainly not with ED2. The dates of last observation and first recorded date when not present at Derby Works so far established are shown below.
Also highlighted by John's research was the lack of any sightings of 12030, 12062, 12089 and 12090 at Derby Works after withdrawal appearing in any sources he had consulted. Subsequently though David Hunt has provided a sighting of 12030 at Derby Works on 8th November 1964. Until confirmed sightings of 12062, 12089 and 12090 at Derby are received it would be interesting to know if any observer saw these anywhere at all after, or a couple of months before, they were withdrawn. Quoted withdrawal dates being 12062 - 19/4/70, 12089 - 12/9/70, 12090 - 17/7/71. Roy Hennefer observed at Crewe Works on 7th December 1969, 12089 at Stonebridge Park on 14th April 1968 and 12091 at Crewe Works on 7th December 1969. Does anyone have more recent sightings of these locomotives?
3020 between 13/04/75 and 11/05/75
3034 between 18/08/73 and 11/11/73
3051 between 05/08/73 and 11/11/73
3121 between 26/05/68 and 11/08/68
3193 between 26/08/67 and 01/10/67
12011 between 01/05/66 and 22/05/66
12029 between 26/06/66 and 31/07/66
12030 quoted variously as scrapped in c8/64 and 1965, not recorded as present 29/08/64 but was recorded as present 08/11/64 but not subsequently
12062 quoted as scrapped 29/12/71
12089 quoted as scrapped 30/12/71
12091 quoted as scrapped 30/12/71
Mass scraping of steam locomotives appears to have ceased at Derby Works towards the end of 1963 with a few others also reportedly dealt with in early 1964. Other than those mentioned above no scrapping of diesel locomotives is recorded as having taken place until August 1976 after which a significant number were dealt with.
Further information is sort regarding the disposal or otherwise of the locomotives listed and also any visit reports for Derby Works that narrow down the date of scraping or departure from Derby Works.
