Alton station looking west. The train is entering platform 1 from Waterloo. SR EMU from Waterloo is at platform 3 (now used by Mid Hants Railway) with a DEMU for Winchester and Southampton at platform 2.

Alton, leaving platform 1 for Waterloo. Platform 2 in the middle, was not electrified and was used by Mid-Hants trains.

Looking west. Electric train is platform now used by MHR. Tour train must have been propelled by class 33/1 at this point.

At Alton, the island platform is the southernmost side. The outer face was platform 3. This is the one now used by the MHR and even in BR days it was used separately for the trains going westwards, and was trapped at the London end. So the train in which our photographer is riding was to or from platform 1 and going to/coming rom the east.
