Hi Ian,

I have found this thread really interesting. Your detailed notes showing how much has changed over the years in terms of traction, operating practice and cost of travel.

My main area of interest is in early WR HST operation (76/77/78), and I am always on the look out for new information. Every year I post an Ad' in the RO in pursuit of new material. Sadly this year I got a "nil" response. A copy of last year's appeal can be found here viewforum.php?f=2

You recorded a few HSTs on 8th and 9th of August and I wondered whether you recorded the full formations of the sets observed. Indeed if you or any member has relevant records from 76-78 I would be keen to receive/see them. I offer payment or alternatively, charitable donations for information received.

In terms of your comments about W43008/9, set 253 004 was getting close to it's first Works light overhaul. It was meant to go to Derby in August 77 but it was held back in favour of 253 006. This latter set, minus W43013 was in collision with some livestock in the Didcot area on 30.07.77. The damage was sufficient for the set to require Works attention and it was sent to Derby in place of 253 004 on 12.08.77 for collision repairs and C4 overhaul.

From your description, it seems that 253 004 departed 17L on the 18.43 Swansea-Paddington on 08.08.77. Whatever the problem was, it does not seem to have prevented the set from working on 09.08.77 when it was noted on 13.15 Paddington-Swansea/16.43 Swansea-Paddington.

Thanks

Thanks Kevin,

Good to know someone has an interest in such recordings.

At the time still recovering from the loss of hydraulic power on the WR. Didn't like travelling in the the HSTs for the awful smell of brake dust burning that the Mk3s regularly suffered from being drawn into the A/C system.

Very little of full formation recording, but coaches do get the occasional mention.

I even had a conducted tour of SPM in early 1977 when everything was sparkly and new, but generally didn't record the full set coach numbers as most were consecutive at the time. Do recall they had just replaced/installed the drive through carriage washer, although it had its shortcomings.

Kevin,

More to come, but it is mind numbing stuff to regurgitate and transcribe en-mass, so need to do it at a pace! When I have the detail all down, I will then correlate with recorded 'other' sightings of stock taken at the time, as I am generally only placing the stock 'used' here at present.

If I can find them, I will also pair them with photos taken at the time.

Thanks for the encouragement. It helps a lot!

Ian
