BR (S) Class 08s D3092-D3101

Post by Peter Hall » Tue Nov 18, 2014 8:42 pm

An interesting feature of D3092-D3101 was that they were the only Class 08s built without train brakes. This clearly was the reason they were amongst the first Class 08s withdrawn as surplus (as opposed to damaged) in 1972. They spent their entire operational BR life on the Southern Region. It is presumed they had specific duties where the lack of train brakes was not a hindrance. Does anyone have knowledge of what these duties were?

Following withdrawal six of the locomotives saw further use whilst the others were scrapped. It would though appear that the quoted disposals of two of these, D3093 and D3096, are not correct. Further details can be found in a feature in the 'Diesel Dilemmas' section of the Society website http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/D3093 The compiler of those notes is very keen to include photographs of the locomotives in BR service or subsequently (excluding shots of D3101 in preservation). Can any one help?

According to my records, three of them escaped from the Southern Region for a while - D3093, D3095 and D3098 spent some time based at Crewe Diesel shed moving there in April 69, June 69 and November 66 (respectively) and all returning to the Southern in October 71.

Their overall allocations do not give much clue to answer Peter's question though.

Davids picture of D3097 is now included on the website http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/D3093

My thanks to David for allowing its use and also his support for this and other 'Diesel Dilemmas' topics.

Further to this comment from Tony, John Hall has discovered an interesting note in the January 1972 Railway Magazine. On page 51 it says D3093/095/098 were fitted with air-brakes c10/71 period end 24/10/71. Can anyone confirm whether this is actually correct and if so where were the air-brakes fitted. It does appear odd that if they were so fitted they were withdrawn less than a year later.
