Does anyone have memories of train travel in the Summer of 1969. An author has been in contact enquiring about travelling from London to York.
On average how long would it take?
What would be the cost of a second class ticket?
MORE TRAIN TRAVEL IN 1969.
Re: MORE TRAIN TRAVEL IN 1969.
I don't have any personal recollections from 1969 but I do have the ER PTT. To save a lot of typing, here's a link to the Napier Chronicles summary of the 1969 ECML service:
http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/wtt69-70.htm
Some of these were non stop through York including 0755, 1000, 1600, 1800 ex KX and some of the overnight trains.
Air braked trains would be "fresh air" mark IIs, others probably still markIs. Most daytime trains would have a restaurant car.
Fastest journey times were about two and a half hours KX-York but stopping trains more like three and a half hours. The ECML was a very different railway then with lots of manual signalling and speed restrictions most notably at Peterborough.
Sundays would be even slower depending on where the engineering work was. Diversions via Hertford North or Askern only added about 15 minutes but via Cambridge or Lincoln added about an hour.
Sorry can't help on ticket prices.
