Railway Observer - Effect of Covid19 Crisis

Post by roeditor » Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:57 pm

Friends

This, the first of what will probably be a number of updates relating to medium term RO availability, is designed to keep members in the picture regarding RO publication during the crisis. It will only appear digitally, and only on this Forum Topic so if you have friends who do not usually seek out the RCTS web pages, please tell them of its availability, and hopefully of its usefullness.

Good News First - The April RO is printed and is being mailed to all members on Monday next - so you should see it around the 1st of April.]

Bad News Next - Amadeus, our printers, are now closed for at least four weeks or until such time as they can legitimately work within the Govt restrictions. Thus the May RO at least will certainly not be printed before the crisis ends and possibly also the June and July editions.

Our Forward Plan - We will continue to publish the RO as normal during the crisis but until the printers resume work it will appear only as a digital edition available on the Society website as a pdf download or an e-mag. However once the printers return to work the monthly RO's missed will be printed and distributed to members at the earliest opportunity.
However because of the reduction in train services and opportunities to observe them, the RO will be a rather different animal for the next few months, with reduced news coverage, no fixtures or Branch reports, but many ad-hoc articles and images. We can't predict anything with certainty at this stage but I am assuming that printed RO production will not get back to full normal working until at the earliest the October issue.
Having said that from May onwards we will be relying on the digital RO to carry the flag, I should add that to address source material / image issues resulting from the current situation, the digital RO will, for the duration of the crisis, appear as close as possible to the first day of the cover month - not up to 12 days earlier as is often the case under normal circumstances. .
As I have already noted elsewhere, members can do their bit to help keep the RO fresh during the crisis. We will need considerably more features - ideally illustrated items of between 400 and 800 words - to make up for the lack of news coverage, so if you have arailway oriented tale you feel would interest members do send it in to the usual address - observer@rcts.org.uk.

See below for a list of revised submission dates for the next four RO's. These reflect the dates whilh will apper in the inside front cover of respetive issues.

Regards

Mike Robinson

In respect of my general email a few minutes ago, it should be noted that irrespective of membership type ALL RCTS members have automatic access to the Digital version of the RO and its vast archive, provided they have gone through the simple registration process.

So - an ideal opportunity to see just how convenient and easy to use it is!
