LNER D-49 class 4-4-0 Peebles-shire

Post by 21275 » Sun May 17, 2020 6:57 pm

I am looking at the Railway News vol. 1 no. 2 for June 1928.
In the section on the LNER it has a table of names and numbers of the D-49 Shire class locomotives. It is headed OFFICIAL List and was submitted by N. Rodd. The entries agree with with that in Locomotives of the LNER Part 4, except for no. 283 "Peebles-shire". The Green Book gives the number of "Peebles-shire" as 311 and notes that no. 283 was a Hunt class D-49 named "The Middleton". The earliest next mention of "Peebles-shire" in the RO that I can find is in the Locomotive Names supplement to the 1937 volume which gives the name and no. of 311 as "Peebles-shire".

Can anyone here offer an explanation, please?

Thanks

Colleagues,
I have now found the answer to my own question, but thanks for the interest.
It transpires that there was an error made in the report in Railway News no. 2 and it is noted in the next issue, no. 3 for July 1928 that "4-4-0 'Shire' class No. 311 'Peebleshire' is not No. 283 as noted on page 11 last month".
