LMS Project - Progress Report

The Society's Locomotives of the LMS Project

The project to write the history of LMS steam locomotives is a vast exercise. Our records identify 10,270 locomotives of capital stock inherited from pre-grouping companies in 1923 or absorbed from the Somerset and Dorset in 1930, 4,636 built by the LMS including those to pre-grouping designs, and 639 built to LMS designs and added to stock by British Railways after nationalisation. In addition there were departmental locomotives and those operated by the LMS in Ireland.
The total of 15,595 capital stock locomotives is currently planned to be covered in 26 volumes, to which will be added a 27th volume on departmental and Irish locomotives. The Society has also covered the evolution of design and construction and of boilers, names of LMS and LNWR locomotives, the history of LMS diesel locomotives and railcars, and of the Southern Division of the LNWR including Wolverton Works, bringing the total coverage to 32 books. Of these 9 have been published to date.
A large number of locomotive classes are involved and consideration has been given as to the best way of dealing with them. The options are:
  • By wheel arrangement
  • By dividing tender and tank engines
  • By Chief Mechanical Engineers responsible for designs
  • By the number of locomotives in each class
  • By Pre-grouping companies
  • After deliberation no single option seemed applicable so it was necessary to adopt a mixture of all the options to suit best the various classes.
In summary the current position regarding the project is as shown in table 1.
Where a book has been published, its content is suitably covered elsewhere. Some other titles are self-evident. Where we believe that neither of these is the case, table 2 provides a brief description of anticipated coverage.
The Society seeks to recruit volunteer authors who have either researched a particular subject(s) or would like to do so. Financial support and team assistance is offered by the Society. Tables 1 and 2 show clearly the gaps in authorship for the project. Even if a subject appears to be covered, please contact us if you are interested, not only in single handed production but also in joint production of titles.
We also seek to produce books on more general railway topics and invite such authors to contact Reg. Anyone interested in joining our team can talk to us informally by contacting:
