Index ImageNorthampton is on a loop line that leaves the West Coast Main Line (old line) at Hanslope Junction to the south and re-joins it at Hillmorton just south of Rugby.

The Class 321 EMU's seen here are used for the SILVERLINK TRAINS services to London Euston. Some are also used by CENTRAL TRAINS for their service to Birmingham New Street together with their own Class 323 EMU's.

A fleet of Siemens DESIRO EMU's are on order to strengthen the fleets of both SILVERLINK and CENTRAL. Work has commenced on the building of a new servicing Depot for these units on the site of the old down sidings, to the north of the station.

VIRGIN WEST COAST run a limited PENDOLINO service in each direction. It is quite common to have some main line services diverted via Northampton. Most of the freight traffic passes through Northampton, but some still uses the ''old line''.

One mile north of Long Buckby station, on the Northampton Loop line. Map ref.. SP 623 668. Follow the B5385 road westwards from the centre of Long Buckby towards Watford. After the road has passed under the line it bears sharp right and runs parallel with it. There are a number of good locations along this road looking eastwards, mostly across just one field. The CENTRAL TRAINS EMU service is hourly in each direction. There is some freight traffic on the loop line.

Long Buckby Link

This ex. Midland Railway Station is a gem, with wonderful buildings and platform canopies. The modern footbridge blends well with the 1857 pile.

MIDLAND MAINLINE run passenger services using HST's and Meridians. There are a few freight trains, mostly aggregates from Mountsorrel or Bardon Hill quarries.

Pictured is Meridian 222008 at platform 4 on a southbound working.

This view is from the occupation bridge immediately south of the station looking northwards. There are many good photo locations along this ex GWR Oxford to Birmingham line. The Oxford canal towpath offers some great views of the line.

This is a busy line, passenger services are operated by VIRGIN CROSS COUNTRY, FIRST GREAT WESTERN LINK and CHILTERN TRAINS. There is avaried amount of freight traffic with trains mostly by either EWS or FREIGHTLINER Your OS maps and Freightliner are ESSENTIAL.

Situated half a mile off of the A5 road eastwards along the Roman Road from Northampton.

This view is of the West Coast Main Line (the old line) from the Marinas public boat and caravan sales viewing area, looking westwards.

There are many very good photo locations of the line along this stretch of the A5 and from the near-by Grand Union Canal towpath.

Pictured here is a VIRGIN WEST COAST loco pushed train, a fast dying breed!  PENDOLINOS RULE OK!
