Q11.08. GWR 0-6-2T 5659

GWR engine 5659 was unusual amongst the 5600 class, in being built with the traditional side rod/big end arrangement, i.e., side rod crank pin set at 180 degrees to the big end crank pin, whereas the normal 5600 class engine had the side rod crank pin and big end crank pin in the same position. This necessitated the massive wheel mounted counter balance weight.

It therefore raises the query, was 5659 the only one constructed with the normal side rod/big end configuration? (WD:9162)
