Q14.04. Wheel Tappers.

Wheel tappers were a common site (and sound) at any major station, but how were they organised? Were they in shifts to cover the period when trains ran and was there a schedule of trains that had to be checked, or was it a more arbitrary arrangement with a tapper doing what he could in the time available? Also when did the practice cease, was there a definite countrywide date, or was it more localised? (MG)
