21st December 2020 · Ends of the Lines – Part 1 – John Cowlishaw – Zoom

The Branch’s first Zoom meeting took place on 21st December when branch committee member John Cowlishaw presented “End of the Line” which covered a tour of termini, past and present, throughout North Wales and the north west; the precise locations being detailed in the Cheltenham Branch report (p125 Feb RO).

John commenced with a look back to his days as a youngster with photographs around Louth and Worksop. He then started from his now local town of Wrexham, and following a trip along the North Wales coast, he went via Merseyside, the general Manchester area, including north west Derbyshire and east Lancashire before heading north via the Fylde and north west coast concluding at Silloth.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with reminiscences of termini which, in some cases, have long since gone together with an insight into how some have drastically changed, not only in appearance but with respect to motive power with virtually all types of traction used in the area throughout the last 50 or 60 years being seen and we eagerly await the next part.

Whilst most of the photographs had been taken by John, some of the older ones were those from a handful of local members.
