Diesel Dilemmas updates
A contributor to the 'Diesel Dilemmas' feature on the Society website has asked how he can be alerted to minor changes to the various dilemmas. One idea put forward has been a thread in this forum. Thus, here it is! Any minor changes not specifically mentioned in their own thread will be included in this one.
For starters, I have just updated http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/47089 with a picture of D7011 soon after it arrived in Sheffield for scrapping and further details of the Walter Heselwood and Marple & Gillott scrap yards located in the Attercliffe area of Sheffield.
Incidentally, should anyone wish to discuss any of the various 'Diesel Dilemmas', or the issues surrounding previously published details of diesel locomotive disposals, with me on Saturday at the AGM I would be happy to do so.

Re: Diesel Dilemmas updates
BR 12071 is shown as "Scrapped by Coopers Metals at the South Yorkshire Railway Preservation Society, Meadowhall June 1995" on a few web sites, is this correct or was it cut-up at Coopers Metals, Attercliffe?

Re: Diesel Dilemmas updates
It might be possible to source a picture of 12071 at Coopers Metals, Attercliffe in due course. It was though very heavily stripped at Meadowhall before moving to Attercliffe.D3796 wrote:BR 12071 is shown as "Scrapped by Coopers Metals at the South Yorkshire Railway Preservation Society, Meadowhall June 1995" on a few web sites, is this correct or was it cut-up at Coopers Metals, Attercliffe?
It should always be taken into consideration as to were the various websites and books that list disposals source their information. The majority take what has been already appeared in print to be accurate and just copy it. Although that information is completely correct in the vast majority of cases it is not always. Very few do their own research to find supporting evidence. The current Railway Magazine gives further information of the efforts now being made to correct the incorrect diesel disposal details that have appeared, many regrettably having been fabricated.
Re: Diesel Dilemmas updates
Roger Harris quotes that "12071 was cut up by Coopers Metals at SYPS and the remains were taken to Coopers Metals, Attercliffe". I guess the actual disposal remains a moot point.Peter Hall wrote:It might be possible to source a picture of 12071 at Coopers Metals, Attercliffe in due course. Derby Works scrappings
The dilemma regarding locomotives scrapped at Derby Works has been updated today http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/derby works scrapings The main changes involve an update on the disposal of ED2 and the addition of D3117 to those for which sightings are being sought. D3117 has generally been recorded as scrapped by Cashmore, Great Bridge in the various disposal books but analysis of that companies records does not show it ever being present.

Re: Diesel Dilemmas updates
Latest update is http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... tiliorossi which covers the dilemma over the mystery Italian Class 10 and other BR locomotives exported to Italy. As more research is don the more it is apparent that activities at Queenborough, or more precisely Rushenden, on the Isle of Sheppey in the early 1970s are the key. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more apparent references to the companies involved have become muddled over the years. It would be particularly useful if anyone local to the area or who has a knowledge if the area with regard to rail and scrap activities and the various companies involved from 1957 onward could get in contact.

Re: Diesel Dilemmas updates
In the last few days I have received confirmation that the mystery Class 03 and Class 04 D2289 are still present in Italy. Thus http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/italy and associated links has been updated including some pictures taken in the last few weeks.
We are still far from solving the mysteries surrounding the ex BR shunting locomotives that went to Italy in the 1970s. Also, despite considerable delving into files at Sheerness library there is still much we do not yet know about Shipbreaking (Queenborough) and their involvement. Anyone who has knowledge of or visited Shipbreaking (Queenborough) in the 1960s/1970s is asked to make contact as they may have some vital clues.

Italian mysteries
In the past few days http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... tiliorossi has been updated. Of particular note, the detectives investigating the ex BR 350 h.p. locomotive exported to Italy have highlighted Class 08 D3193 as a suspect. If this did indeed go to Italy in 1967 as is now being suggested, it was not the locomotive photographed in 1974. Did in fact more than one 350 h.p get exported to Italy? The mystery deepens.
