Andy,
I have records of many ER ECML observations and limited WR Welsh observations in the period for which you are interested. It will just take quite a lot of research to identify the dates and units concerned, although the detail may be limited at this distance in time.
For good measure and an observation you may already have is of 41001 and 41002 in 'reversed' blue grey livery as it was originally out-shopped, passing Retford on 31st July 1973 heading North on a test/demonstration run that was well publicised and had a good public turnout to see its so called 'first' ECML run.
It followed up with a run also observed on 2nd August in both up and down directions and probably did other test runs around that time too.

I have just been checking something in "Kings Cross Lineside 1958-84" by David Percival.
I presume you have seen the HST chapter on pages 103-108? This gives various details about the introduction of HSTs on the ER.
