We have met by the way on a Railtour a few years back (we were seated together)

One question - when was 31294 renumbered and when did it enter Donny, because looking at this guys notes he saw it between Glos and Swindon on 2/3/74 - may even have dragged his DMU to Swindon judging by his notes!! Unknowingly he may be one of a few/if the only basher to have it Green TOPS!!

Thanks for the lists.

The meeting possibly on D1015 to Scarborough?

I'm very interested in the 31294 02/03/74 observation. 5827/31294 went to Doncaster on 06/03/74 with EQ and came out on 07/04/74 as blue with dual brakes. Your source records support the story that 5827 was renumbered to 31294 in green: it is likely that the renumbering was done on exam at Old Oak in mid February 1974. What makes you think that 31294 may have been dragging a dmu?

5827/31294 was not the last green class 31: that honour belongs to 5818 which entered Doncaster on 20/03/74. 5803/31273 ought to have been the last but was painted blue at Old Oak in 11/73. There's a faint possibility that Old Oak also painted 5827/31294 blue but the available evidence points to it remaining green until going into Doncaster.

These livery issues really deserve a thread of their own.

Yes Mr C - it was the Scarborough tour.

I sent you some 31 passenger Gen a few weeks later

RE 31294

I will have to ask my mate about 294 hauling the DMU. His notes show 'T' - (travelling) next to a DMU unit number, but it also shows a 'P' (Pulled-by) next to 31294.

RE liveries

I have a Flickr site as well (Gang of 3) and have posted some of Sean Greenslades' notebooks, which have lots of livery etc details, which you have commented on. I have passed on ALL of his notebooks to Chris Parkinson who posted them all into his Flickr site (50048) - so if you want to scour that Gen just take a look!

5818 (arrived Doncaster 20/03/74) and 31294 (arrived Doncaster 06/03/74) were actually the last green class 31s. 31294 is reckoned to be the only class 31 to carry a TOPS number in green livery, but I'm on the look out for good evidence to substantiate that. Your report confirms that 5818 arrived on works unrenumbered. 31294 departed on 07/04/74 in blue and it would have been nice if it could be confirmed that it hadn't already been in the paint shop before 30/03/74.

I can confirm both that 31294 was the only green TOPS 31 (and so far only one poor photo of it is known to exist) and that 5818 was still 5818 when it arrived, i have a photo of it on the works half stripped and still numbered 5818 with 31286 in chalk on the cab.

5827/31294 had a C Exam at Old Oak that was completed on 16 February 1974.

If I remember rightly the observations at Gloucester/Swindon and the photo at Bristol Parkway are on the same day, 2 March 1974. It is plausible that the loco dragged the dmu in service Gloucester-Swindon, then took the dmu empty to Bristol before running light engine through Bristol Parkway to return to Gloucester.

A bit of information I'm still looking for is the reporting number of Gloucester-Swindon trains, and whether it matches with the headcode displayed in the picture.

5827/31294 arrived on Doncaster Works on 6 March 1974.

Goodness knows, I know at least ten people who saw 31294 in green but just that one rather poor shot has surfaced.
