Oxford by Chiltern Trains
Yesterday (Thursday 15th December) we set out from Strood on the 10.05 to Charing Cross with frequent announcements that a ticket check was about to take place, but we saw no sign of it (is this just a strategy to get miscreants worried?).
Work was continuing apace at Abbey Wood with signs of the Cosssrail platforms emerging in the form of the outer upright panels, with no track visible yet until after the London end from where one line is continuous and much going on in the general area.
Waterloo East and the Bakerloo got us to Marylebone for coffee and croissant before catching the 11.35 to Oxford in unit 172103. Time was kept throughout the journey which had few stops but only Isis was omitted on the branch. There is still track work going in the area previously occupied by Rewley Road Station and approaches. At Oxford a quick bus journey on an 8 minute frequency service was useful in getting to the city centre to get a quick walk around and a flavour of the architecture, and because of one way streets the return journey gave more views.
At the station our 14.41 departure, unit 168218, had arrived 14.10 and as the driver was on board we were able to use the train as a comfortable refreshment area, sitting space being somewhat lacking at the station. We had arrived at platform 2 and departed from platform 1.
On the down journey there had been an announcement in Chinese(?) just before Bicester Village and on the up we got the reason why ? our train became full of visitors laden with top-of-the-range clothing! Timekeeping was again impeccable.
One thing was surprising was the complete absence of any publicity at either Marylebone or Oxford for a service that had only been running for 3 days.
At Marylebone was 68013 (Vossloh 2691 of 2014) ? always good to see any modern vehicle with a proper cast works plate!

Japanese, I believe.

There was plenty of publicity outside Paddington yesterday with 'Chiltern' people (probably actually contractors) giving out leaflets extolling the virtues of the alternative route to Oxford. I took one (a) to see what they said, and (b) so that there were fewer to give to other people!
