CLAN LINE

Postby Chris Meredith » Thu Jan 05, 2017 5:29 pm

As a working member of the MNLPS I am often asked at branch meetings "How is the the overhaul of Clan Line progressing?"
The current situation at LNWR Crewe Heritage is that work on the boiler is coming towards completion, a hydraulic test is planned for later this month. On the mechanical side, once work on the valve setting and the brake system is completed the rolling chassis will be ready to receive the boiler. Good progress is being made with the crinoline and cladding repairs. Some items such as the mechanical lubricators and superheater header which were overhauled in house at Stewarts Lane have been returned to Crewe and await refitting. The electrical equipment associated with AWS, TPWS, OTMR and GSMR has been overhauled and is ready for refitting. Our support coach, Mercator, has been overhauled by Arlington Services at Eastleigh and awaits transfer to Crewe to be reunited with the locomotive.
Hopefully once the light and loaded test runs are completed in late March/early April Clan Line will return to her home base at Stewarts Lane and resume hauling the Belmont British Pullman from 28th April. Non Pullman trips are also planned in association with UK Railtours, on May 27th 'The Atlantic Coast Express' from Waterloo to Exeter and return and on 9th July 'The Waterloo Sunset' from Waterloo to Sherborne and Yeovil Jn returning via the Portsmouth direct, this is the 50th anniversary of the end of Southern steam. On 5th July a Pullman 'Bournemouth Belle' is planned from Waterloo to Bournemouth and Poole, this is the 50th anniversary of both Clan Line's last day in service and the last time the Belle was steam hauled. Further trips are in the pipeline, watch this space.

01/02/17 update
Repairs to middle big end are complete and motion fully reassembled, all three valves now set. Work on the boiler is almost complete, an official hydraulic test is provisionally planned for next week. This is when the clock starts ticking. Painting of the tender and cab is under way, boiler cladding and crinoline repairs are complete, new lagging is on order.
Following the WCRC train split at Mitre Bridge Jn, the tail pins on our support coach have been non destructive tested and passed. The coach returned yesterday from Eastleigh to Crewe.

I saw support coach "Mercator" last Saturday (28th) at Eastleigh Works, and have noted that it was moved to Crewe on the 31st.

The boiler has passed it's hydraulic test at 400 psi, the clock starts ticking when it is back in the frames and a steam test is carried out.

MAY UPDATE: Anyone who has looked at the photographic record in the news section of the Clan Line website will see there has been a great deal of progress. The cladding has been finished, the nameplate backing plates are in place, the grate is now in place along with the damper and hopper mechanisms. The majority of the cab floor is in place. The brake gear has been set up and adjusted. The cab is in place and the electrics are being replaced together with the GSM-R radio. The cylinder drain cocks have been refitted and a new brick arch has been built. Weighing of the locomotive is in hand, the height will also be established, laser gauging profiling has been booked for 11/05. The plan is for the fire to be lit later this week so some running up and down the yard at Crewe Heritage can be carried out.
Soon Clan Line will be reported in the RO back on the mainline where she belongs hauling the Belmond Pullman and other charter trains.
