Class 156 coaches (DMS/DMSL)

Postby buckett » Fri Oct 26, 2018 9:52 am

I have a few photos [attached] taken last year of a ScotRail class 156 and am trying to work out which coach is the DMS and which is the DMSL. There is also an internal shot of one of the cabs.

Unfortunately the coach numbers are not visible.

Does anyone know of any clues externally or in the cab that could help me identify which is which?

Thanks

[additional info.] I think it looks like the roof may have an additional vent (or other adornment) and one end BUT I'm not sure if this is correct and if so which end this is

I've just realised that the best clue may well be the small window behind the front door on my second picture. There is a blind but would that be opposite the toilet (DMS) or luggage compartment (DMSL)?

The DMSL car is that numbered in the 52xxx series, so in this unit will be 52499.
The coach numbers on Saltire liveried units are at the inner ends (visible in your second image)
The toilet is located on the right hand side of the unit when looking towards the cab within the saloon, so this window will be opaque.
It looks like the vehicle nearest the camera in these images has a clear window, so this end is most likely the 57xxx DMS car.

Thank you for your response David. Unfortunately the numbers are just a bit too small to read. The rear coach (the only number properly visible) looks like 52xxx not 57xxx but I have had images like this before where, for example, a number definitely looks like an eight except when I've viewed another [closer] image of the vehicle it's been a six and it's been down to pixelation or light. Like you, I had started to conclude that this is the DMS but based more on the front window on the other side and additionally from what I can make out of the first full window on that side and the relative position of the seats next to it. So it's pleasing that we both agree. Thanks again for taking the time to send me your thoughts. Alan
