Sightings

Record of interesting sightings of traction or rolling stock could be a way of getting the forum going.

Yesterday passing Hornsey Depot on a train the two Harry Needle locos, 01529 and 08892 were clearly visible and Identifiable working with the contractors, and the new measurement train with 43062 John Armitt on one end was in Ferme Park Sidings opposite. From the pedestrian overbridge outside Hornsey station the Niteq wheel lathe shunter was photographable attached to 378205.

With regard to current sightings there are two 'Diesel Dilemmas' which encourage current sightings of particular Class 08 locomotives associated with the Somerset Quarries. These are http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... s/quarries and http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels ... sels/08757 Every sighting helps!

Isn't the purpose of the RO to include "sightings"?
Is this Forum going to replace the magazine?

Surely the idea is to make key sightings available earlier with them also appearing in the RO were they can be referred to at a later date.

I remember in the late 1970's scouring the RO as soon as it came for details of locations of condemned locomotives and coaching stock. Unfortunately by the time it appeared in print most had been despatched to a scrap yard. Having the information much earlier would have given a better chance of seeing some of those I never observed. The RO references of course are proving invaluable in unravelling some of the mysteries in 'Diesel Dilemmas' http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/diesels/ and 'Carriage Conundrums' http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/carriages/

Isn't the place to find that sort of really up to date current info on , for example, SE-GEN on Yahoo Groups?

As the majority of us are 'spotters' in one way or another it might be worth asking in this thread the following question and see what posters thoughts are.

Of the various rolling stock that is capable of operating on the National Network and included in Locomotives & Coaching Stock (Platform 5) which is the hardest to sight using traditional methods?

By traditional methods I mean observing at stations, from the line side or through a train window. I would not include privileged access or 'bunking' of depots.

For starters, as an example I would say the two Beilhack snowblowers ADB968500 & ADB968501 are quite difficult to see as they spend the majority of the year locked in their windowless shed at Edinburgh Slatford.

If you mean reading numbers, Voyagers, whoever is running them, with miniscule numbers, low down on the nose ends and below platform height in stations.

One a visit to the Midlands on Tuesday 10th February, I used the Nuneaton to Coventry line. Had not realised that it is a stand alone service utilising a single unit diesel railcar, in this case 153375. It looks as if this is about to change, with a platform lengthening of the only intermediate station at Bedworth and new stations being built.
