Sunday's Torbay departed BTM 36' late due to issues with the new Bristol area signalling, 6' late arriving Taunton. The 47m 12ch from Westbury start to Taunton arrival were covered in less than even time in 44 mins 9 secs with speed in the middle 70s, Somerton summit was passed at 70 MPH. On the return the 20m 9ch from from passing Exeter St Davids to Whiteball summit were covered in 17min 8 secs beating the previous record in preservation of 17 min 51 secs by 60163 also with load 12. At Whiteball summit the speed was 68 MPH on 36% cut off, Graham Ward at the regulator.
A very satisfactory day despite late running at some stages due to signalling and regulation issues due to late running GWR services. Great engines these Bulleids, with performance such as this who needs new builds!!

Members of Clan Line's support crew have spent the last 24 hours at SPM Bristol preparing the loco for tomorrow's historic run on the 'Cornishman' to Par. I believe I am correct in saying that this will be the first time a Merchant Navy has been to Cornwall although light pacifics have ventured as far as Penzance on specials, I seem to remember that the last steam from Penzance was not worked by a GWR loco but by 34002 Salisbury circa 1965/66. (Perhaps someone out there can confirm this)
She has successfully passed her FTR so hopefully there will be a storming performance over the South Devon banks to show what a Bulleid can do.

Yesterday was a day of superlatives. Despite a 30 minute late start from Temple Meads due to operational difficulties (again) Clan Line performed magnificently, with a time of 62 minutes 20 seconds from Exeter to St Davids to Plymouth the train was now only 10 mins down, this with 10 coaches equal to 385 tons has been reported as record for a single headed train in preservation. On the return the loco surmounted Hermerdon in the drizzle and damp with two valves lifting under very difficult conditions. The train then ran a few minutes ahead of schedule to Weston where it was held at Worle junction for an on time HST to precede, the arrival back at BTM being on time.
Congratulations to the support crew for the preparation and hard work during the day also to the DB loco crews for their skilful handling of the loco.

Clan Line will be putting in an appearance on Saturday 14 July Belmond British Pullman, Surrey Hills but only as a 'whistle' on the front of the train as due to the hot and dry conditions resulting in severe fire risk a DB class 67 diesel will be doing the work.

Clan has passed FTR and is ready polished and prepared for tomorrow's Surrey Hills. Due to fire risk as result of the hot and dry weather a Class 67 diesel will be providing the power as train engine, Clan Line will be pilot providing just enough steam to cushion the pistons and provide lubrication. Please note there is a new departure time of 1216 from Victoria the time at Clapham Jn remains as before, on the return from Shalford times between Redhill and Victoria have adjusted to conform with the new timetable, the arrival back at Victoria is 1605. See our Facebook & Twitter pages.

Nice and easy run today, apart from a 10 minute late arrival as a reaction of waiting 1610 Victoria to Faversham to clear platform 2 as a result of a NR timing error!

The society has been approached and requested to do two new tours which we have agreed to do, both involve the Torbay Express.
Next Sunday 29th July Clan Line will be going from Bristol to Kingswear via Weston, the loco will be leaving Stewarts Lane late on Saturday afternoon and returning from Bristol late Sunday/early hours of Monday, this will involve some very long hours by the support crew, and they say it is a hobby......! There will be a repeat on Sunday 19th August except the train will be routed by Bath & Westbury. Most unfortunately because of the hot and dry conditions it is likely that there will be diesel assistance unless there is lots of rain beforehand.

Unfortunately the society has had to pull out from doing next Sunday's Torbay Express as one the key members of the support crew was taken ill yesterday whilst working a Stewarts Lane with a suspected heart attack. Both he and his partner were to be part of Sunday's crew, a minimum of 8 persons are required and at very short notice it is difficult to get the numbers as we are an all volunteer organisation and people have other commitments. The crew would have been required to be with the loco from Saturday until return to Stewarts Lane in the early hours of Monday. Very tiring for some who are in the 60+ age group.
I'm glad to say our member who was taken ill is making good progress at St Thomas's and was able to justice to his breakfast today! He hasn't lost his sense of humour either.

The MNLPS have put out a statement on social media (Facebook & Twitter), regarding Clan Line's 'no show' on Sunday. This expands on the details that I advised previously.
